The Fuckin best...

What's up bredren!
So yesterday I went out with my girlfriend to get some essential clothing items. She needed some pants and I needed some underwear. That was the mission. But, I have really been wanting to get a nice overcoat. The weather is getting colder and my new found sense of style is telling me that hoodie sweaters just aren't cutting it if I'm trying to be warm and classy. BUT, among the hundreds of classy, elegant, raw photos of good men wearing overcoats, this one particular picture pops into my head with the relentlessness of a wasp on your fruit salad. A little background information before I continue; I have deep seeded disgust for characters like Lil Wayne and Drake and Flo-Rida and anyone of those characters that wouldn't be caught dead doing any real philanthropic work (with their millions), listening to Dizzy Gillespie, DJ Shadow, or Rusko, or put anything smaller than dubs on their 'unique whips'.
I digress, it just saddens me how the beautiful Hip Hop scene I once knew has been warped and bastardized into an uneducated 'HIP POP' scene. The real Hip Hop scene is what some would call 'underground' and it often time requires an eclectic ear and intuitive nature in order to find. Or a down hommie who wants to take a chance at share their precious collection with you.
I digress even further, this is the picture that pops into my head and it is on this album cover by Drake. He is wearing a black peacoat which resembles the gray coat that I am going to get... sometime soon.
The focus of this blog is not to say anything about the coat or compare my coat to his. Eff the coats... a coat is a coat is a coat. Ya get me? I just want to take this time to express my feelings on this whole Hip Pop scene in a very short, small way. So if you do not know who Drake is, DRAKE is a protégé (if you would) to Lil Wayne (a famed rap star for some reason). His real name is Aubrey. At first I gave him an attentive ear because he appeared to be a mix of African American and something else and so am I so HEY, why not. Us chocolate, mixed children have a unique similarity.
Never heard of Drake?
Oh you’ll soon find out.
He’s kind of a big deal apparently.
Let me clarify before everyone thinks that I am bashing on Aubrey. I try my best to live my life according to the famed quote, "If you're causing no harm then you're alright with me." With that said, Aubrey is ALRIGHT, and everything, but he’s trying a little bit too hard to fit into some niche (I can't put my finger on it but I am sure you can tell), and ‘the fuckin best’ is something you say about a video game or slice of pie, not a woman- exhibit A

So since I gave Drake some listening, I figured, "Why not see if Lil Wayne is making anything that I can listen to these days?" It has been over a year since I have listened to any sort of Hip Pop or mainstream stuff so let's see if I am missing out on something noteworthy....NOPE!! Exhibit B

Every girl though... Seriously bruv?????

If you are making music for the sake of the art form, the creative outlet it provides for the artists, it's breath-taking ability to stir the hearts of the masses, it's ability to make you move and sweat, then you can surely make music for the youth. It is all about the youth. They are the future and the stability of the earth depends on them. I am only 20 and I understand this. If you don't have anything for the kids then you are simply making music for the money, or some greedy corporation is financing/ facilitating the distribution of your music for the sake of money. Ya get me?

It will be a very, very long time before I give Pop(ular) culture or any main stream media so much as a little bit of my time. I appreciate all things primal in life, creativity, innovation, history, the raw moments, and the fist pumping fury of an emotionally involving tune. As long as I can find something interesting among the infinite possibilities in those things, I'm cool without Drake and Lil Wayne.

Paz, Amor, y Libertad

  1. This is by far my favorite blog Brandon. You have decided to take a risk in pouring your opinion out about drake and lil waynes music. I loved reading every single word on this blog. You have not only a great mind, but as well as a great soul. You are intitled to your opinion and eff all the haters who don't agree with you. You know the real shit that's going on around this world. Its better to listen to real shit going down rather than Wayne rapping about fucking a girl doggy style something. Anyway, I love your voice Brandon. Keep spreading good knowledge through your blogs. Love, anonymous

  2. Dude I totally agree mainstream is pretty muych dead! I give a few exceptions to the rule. Jay-Z's American Gangster album if you have not listened to that yet then you are truely missing out! Second (and this one is HIGHLY debatable) Kanye West. Yes, he is mainstream but I like the fact that he tells it like it is from his POV on his cd's. Other than that I'm more of an Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, and Living Legends kinda guy. Wait till you see me rock my coats this winter homie!
