"Bahati Foundation rider Jorge Alvarado was struck by a car Thursday morning (April 9, 2009) while out on a training ride.
A police report says Alvarado, 28, was struck by Patrick Roraff, 18, at 9:52 and died at the scene. A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said Roraff, a high school senior, was traveling north on Greenspot Road at more than 70 mph when he lost control and came across the road to strike Alvarado, who was traveling south. Alvarado was thrown into a nearby field where he died. The sheriff’s department spokeswoman, Cynthia Beavers, told VeloNews that Roraff was street racing with students in two other vehicles at the time of the incident."

"Alvarado was a promising rider and had just signed a contract with Bahati Racing. It is a tragedy such young talent was taken while doing what he loved. If you are in a car please remember that you are NOT the only one on the road and that it does NOT belong to just you. It must be shared with everyone. We are on bicycles and have nothing but lycra to protect us and you are encased in metal. Please be cautious out there!"
